On July 14th 2018, the French Community in Uganda celebrated their 229th commemoration of the storming of Bastille that sparked off the French Revolution in 1789. This freedom centric celebration came only a day before France won the World Cup Finale on Sunday 15th July, setting precedent for double French celebration across the globe.
French Ambassador Stephanie Rivoal at the celebration held at her residence in Nakasero said that “It has been said that the French team is the last African team standing” justifying that “France and Africa share ties that go deep…” Right Hon. Prime Minister, Ruhakana Rugunda who attended the celebration also emphasised the strength and benefits of the relations and ties between the two states, and how that can build desired growth in development areas of economy, politics and security.
The theme of the event was “a new era of women”, celebrating the contribution of women who fought for rights in the revolution and reflecting on women who are doing the same in this century.
The party was awash with wine and French delicacies and guests ended the night with dancing close to midnight. And were still ready to return the next day for the world cup final.
The very next day at 5pm in Kampala, well wishers, French supporters and silent Croatia fanatics returned to the French Ambassador’s residence for the world cup and ended the night in jubilant applause for the last “black team” standing. Majority of the revellers turned up wearing jeans, shorts, and Tees in the colours of the French National flag, (blue, white and red) after the previous night of fashion fever for the Bastille day celebration. The night ended with more merry making, dance music and of course French wine.
